Apple adds new printer, scanner drivers for Snow Leopard

Apple adds new printer, scanner drivers for Snow Leopard
New offerings for Canon, Brother, HP, Lexmark
Apple on Monday released a wide range of new printer drivers for Mac OS X Snow Leopard. The drivers add compatibility for many printers and scanners manufactured by Canon, Brother, HP and Lexmark. Users with devices not supported by the drivers included on the original v10.6 installation DVD can use Software Update to automatically check for new drivers after the printer or scanner is connected to the Mac.
Software Update obtains only the individual drivers for attached printers, while complete packages are available from Apple's Support page. [Canon Download - 275MB] [Brother Download - 100MB] [HP Download - 387MB] [Lexmark Download - 117MB]

Maximum Utility in Minimum Space - Multifunction Inkets
Scanning the Universe

Most newer multifunction inkjet printers have flatbed scanning functionality. That means you can scan just about anything by lifting the cover, placing your page face down, closing the cover, and pressing the Scan button. You can also import scanned pages into word processing and photo editing software.
Just like printing, the quality of the scan will be dependent on the dpi setting you use. For online use, you can select a low dpi, like 72 or 75, and for printing color photos you might select a much higer dpi, such as 600. The higher the dpi setting, the larger your file size will be once your item is scanned into your document.

I use scanning mostly to send back signed contracts (usually prepared in MS Word) to my clients. I print and sign the signature page of the contract. Then, I place the signed page face down in my scanner, select the entire signature page in the online document and choose Insert, Picture, then From Scanner or Camera in Word. My multifunction printer's software opens where I can select the settings for the page to be scanned. Most scanners have a Preview function that allows you to see what will be scanned. When I'm satisfied, I just click Scan Now and the signed page is inserted into my document. I can then either email or fax the signed page to my client.

Nothing but the Fax

Some multifuntion inkjet printers include a separate keypad write on the printer where you can just insert your page face down, dial the fax number and send the document. With mine, I have to scan the page first, say into a Word document. Once the scan is completed I can then use the Print command in Word to open the Windows Fax utility to send my fax.
If you send more than a few faxes per month, you'll want to consider selecting a model with its own keypad, and perhaps even its own fax software. I find the basic Windows Fax utility rather clumsy to use. If you're faxing pages every day and you have the room for it, a standalone fax machine is better yet and will save you time in the long run. Additionally, if your computer is turned off you won't receive an incoming fax.

Copy That

Making copies with a multifunction inkjet printer is simple. On my model, I just lift the lid, put the page face down, close the lid, and press Copy. I also have the option to make multiple copies and to copy in black and white or color.
To make two-sided copies I need to take the page, flip it over, put it back into the paper carriage and print the back side. This is an inconvenience, but I rarely need to make two-sided copies.

I don't have the need to make hundreds of copies at a time and to do so would be a lot more expensive on a multifunction inkjet printer than walking over to Kinko's or another copy and print services store. But for a few copies at a time it suits my needs perfectly.

Lots of Use for Your Dollar

Multifunction inkjet printers are a great value. With prices falling and quality improving every day you just can't get a more useful tool.
The biggest expense you'll have with this type of printer is the cost of ink cartridges. When you shop for a multifunction inkjet printer, check into the prices for replacement cartridges before you buy.

I've never had much luck with recycled or refillable ink cartridges, and using off-brands can also be risky. I stick to my manufacturer's brand and shop for the best price I can find. Warehouse stores, like Sam's Club and Costco can really help to keep the costs down. You can also look for sales.

With my printing volume I replace my black cartridge around every two months and the color cartridge around very three months. Your replacement frequency will depend entirely on your printing habits.

Multifunction Inkjet Printers and Your Home Business - Part 1
Multifunction inkjet printers can be a great home business solution. Not only do they perform a variety of important tasks, like both black and white and color printing, scanning, faxing, and copying, they take the least amount of space possible. In most home business offices, space is at a premium. That's what makes these printers as utilitarian as the Swiss Army Knife in the home office.

Like my whiteboard, a multifunction inkjet printer is a tool I wouldn't want to do without. In addition to their versatility, the cost of multifunction inkjet printers has dropped to the point where they're no longer a major investment. This means you get maximum value for your hard earned home business dollar. In fact, you'll quickly spend more on replacing print cartridges than on the printer itself. And, depending on what you need to output, you can use just about any type of paper and get decent results. That means you can use cheaper paper for most purposes.

If you don't already own a multifunction inkjet printer, you'll certainly want to consider buying one. This article will explain common features of these handy tools for home business, and help you decide if this is the right kind of printer for your business or for working at home.

The Little Printer that Could

Printing in Black and White - Even the least expensive multifunction inkjet printers will give you a fairly good black and white printed page in just a few seconds. While you can use just about any type of paper, your results will vary with your paper selection. For general office use, I find a recycled multi-use 20 pound bond paper with a brightness level of 84 to be just fine. If I'm sending correspondence to a client, I like to beef up the paper to a better quality 22 pound bond with a 94 brightness rating. The increased brightness makes the print look sharper and the slightly heaver weight makes your correspondence seem just a touch more substantial. You can get slightly better text results using special inkjet paper, but for black and white I've never felt it was necessary.
Printing Color Text and Graphics - I get very good results from my multifunction inkjet printer when printing in color or grayscale. Grayscale is a variation of black and white, but instead of just two colors, various shades of gray are reproduced. The result can be increased sharpness. Saving files in grayscale also saves a lot of memory and printing will be faster because the files are typically smaller than color.

Here you will notice a difference with inkjet paper over multipurpose paper. Still, if I'm sending a report with text and graphics, like charts and graphs, the 94 brightness, 22 pound paper works just fine. 30lb. paper stock is also available.

How long it takes to print a color page will depend on your printer and the resolution (dpi - dots per inch) you select. Except for photographs, I rarely print anything in color at less than 150 dpi nor more than 300 dpi. The higher the dpi you select, the sharper your output will be, but the file size of your document will also be larger and take longer to print.

Printing Photographs - Except for a quick printing test before my final output, I print photographs only on premium picture paper. You can print a half decent color photo on most multifunction inkjet printers using 30 lb. inkjet paper, but when you consider that photo paper is usually 51 - 71 lb weight, you can imagine what the difference will be even before you print.

Photo papers are available in Matte, Soft Gloss, Satin, and High Gloss finish. You can even buy photo paper that is printable on both sides, so if you make a mistake you can just reverse the sheet in your printer wihout using up another piece of this expensive paper.

Save money and space - without sacrificing print quality - by getting an all-in-one printer. Multifunction printers can be ideal solutions for small businesses. Besides their obvious space saving features, having a single multifunction printer that prints, faxes, copies, and scans can be much more economical than buying four separate machines. These mid-price multifunction inkjet printers all perform all four functions, and print in photographic quality color as well.

1. HP (Hewlett-Packard) Officejet Pro L7780 All-in-One Printer

PriceGrabber.comI've put this inkjet multifunction printer at the top of the list because it's a feature packed all-round winner. Have an office workgroup? You'll like the built-in networking, scan-to-network capability and digital filing - the ability to scan to network folders without having to go through the PC. Have a home office? You'll appreciate the 50 page automatic document feeder and built-in duplexing (two-sided printing). And wherever you're using it, the Officejet Pro L7780 prints and copies fast, at up to 35 ppm in black and 34 pm in color.

2. HP Photosmart C7280 All-In-One Printer

PriceGrabber.comIf you need to share print, fax, scan and copy functions between two or more computers, this multifunction inkjet printer is also an excellent choice; it's another multifunction printer that has everything and does everything at a good price. HP's Photosmart C7280 features wired and wireless networking and it prints and copies quickly (up to 33 ppm black and 33 in color). What else? Duplexing, full-featured faxing, and card slots to handle various memeory cards, just to name a few features. My only quarrel is the small paper tray (100 sheets).

3. Canon Pixma MP830 Multifunction Printer

PriceGrabber.comWhy pay for networking capabilities if you don't need them? Fast printing and copying (30 ppm black/24 ppm color) would be enough to make this multifunction inkjet printer a winner; it produces a photo lab quality, borderless 4" x 6" photo in about 36 seconds. There's full featured faxing and scanning, too, but what I really like is the built-in duplexing (two sided printing) and second paper tray, with a 35 page automatic document feeder. This is a great choice for the small or home office.

4. Lexmark X9350 All-In-One Inkjet Printer

PriceGrabber.comWhat I love about Lexmark's X9350 is the amount of features you get at this price point. This four function multifunction printer prints and copies at speeds up to to 32 ppm black and 27 ppm in color, is PictBridge compatible for printing from digital cameras, and comes with duplexing and an automatic document feeder. Fax features include fax forwarding, broadcasting, and the ability to store up to 89 speed-dial numbers. And the X9350 All-In-One comes network ready, with both WIFI and Ethernet networking built in. What's the downside? Print quality. It's not terrible but it's not great either.

5. HP Photosmart 3310 Multifunction Inkjet Printer

PriceGrabber.comIf you want built-in wireless networking but spend a lot of time working with photos, opt for this multifunction inkjet printer which offers photo-quality resolution up to 4,800-optimized dots per inch color - making it easy to produce high quality 4X6 photos. HP claims this printer also has the world's fastest photo printing with print speeds of up to 32 pages per minute black and up to 31 ppm color. And there's full featured faxing and scanning, too.

Before You Buy A Color Printer[Printer Color ]

Before You Buy A Color Printer[Printer Color ]
Do you really need a color printer? If you mostly print black and white documents, the answer is no. But if you need to print documents with graphics or photographs, then a color printer is a good investment. Your next choice will be deciding between an inkjet or a laser printer. While nothing beats the quality and speed of a color laser printer, it's the most expensive option. A color inkjet printer can provide you with good quality at a more reasonable price.
Color Printer Speed
If speed is important to you, cross the lower-end inkjet color printers off your list. Midrange color inkjet printers will print text at 14-17 pages per minute; printing a page of graphics can take several minutes. Compare this with laser color printers, some of which can print color at 26 ppm, and shoot out the first page in less than 10 seconds. How much speed do you need and how much are you willing to pay for it?
Color Printer Quality
Both inkjet and laser color printers can produce professional quality photos. However, if you're looking at an inkjet printer, be aware that all color inkjet printers are not capable of doing this. Generally, the higher end the inkjet printer, the better the quality. There are color inkjet printers that are specially designed to produce top quality photos, and this is the kind you should get if printing photos is important to you.
Color Printer Resolution
Check the resolution to see how many dpi (dots per inch) the color printer is capable of; the higher it is, the higher the image quality. The standard resolution of 600x600 will be more than adequate for most printing, except for photo quality printing. Also check to see if the color printer offers you a range of resolutions, so you can choose different resolutions for different printing jobs, such as draft mode.
Related Color Printer Costs such as cartridges, toner, etc
To print true black, inkjet printers need to have a separate black cartridge. Also look for inkjet color printers that have separate cartridges for each color; it's cheaper to replace just the color that you need than to replace the printer cartridge unit. Replacing a laser printer's toner cartridge is much more expensive than replacing an inkjet cartridge, but printing with a color laser printer costs less per page.
Color Printer Reliability
Some low-end color printers are practically designed to be throwaways. And some brands are more reliable than others. It's more economical to spend $800 on a printer you'll be able to use for 5 years than $200 each year to replace a printer that's worn out. Examine the color printer's construction. Is the cartridge attached to the printhead? Replacing a printhead is much more expensive than replacing a print cartridge.
Test A Color Printer Before You Buy
Never buy a color printer without testing it first in the store. Read the specifications and see how the printer measures up when you run it. See how the color printer prints both a page of text and a page of graphics or a photo; some printers don't do both equally well. If it's a color inkjet printer, pay close attention to the sharpness of the text and images; some inkjet printers do a poor job with sharp lines.
